West Ham boss David Moyes backs Kalvin Phillips to rediscover his form

Kalvin Phillips made his move to West Ham United from Manchester City in the January transfer window for the remainder of the season.

At Manchester City, the England midfielder fell way down the pecking order since the arrival of Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes last summer. The outcasted midfielder was keen to secure his spot in the Euros and needed to make a move to secure his place in the Three Lions squad.

Phillips has endured a difficult 18-month campaign since his move from Elland Road in the summer of 2022 and was recently left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

West Ham manager David Moyes wants to help the midfielder rediscover his form and get him back to the top with the Hammers.

Moyes said: “I’m speaking to him regularly because he’s such a good boy to talk to as well. He wants to listen, he’s willing to give feedback and he wants to get better. There is no doubt he is going to come back to his best form and I hope we can crack the code before our time runs out, I really do. There has to be something that everybody has seen so we have to crack the code to get him back on it.”

The former Man United manager has expressed confidence in Phillips’ abilities and believes the midfielder’s talent would eventually shine through.

Phillips has been a key player for Gareth Southgate for the last two major tournaments and was even named England’s Player of the Year in 2020-21.

The 28-year-old came off the bench in West Ham’s thumping 5-0 win over Freiburg and will likely be among the substitutes on Sunday when the Hammers host Aston Villa.
