Wolves vs Newcastle Player Ratings: Fabian Schar scores on his return

Wolverhampton Wanderers took on Newcastle United at the Molineux stadium in the Premier League on Sunday. Newcastle have an unbeaten start to the season before this with two wins and a draw. Wolves on the other hand are winless, with two losses and a draw.

The first half was all about Newcastle with the ball but it was the hosts that made the difference, with Mario Lemina scoring the opener. It was a counterattack spearheaded by striker Jorgen Strand Larsen which brought the goal.

The Magpies however dug deep to change the result. They fought back, first through a goal from defender Fabian Schar. Substitute Harvey Barnes then scored a late second to give the away side all three points.

Goalkeeper

S. Johnstone — 5/10. It was a case of not quite enough from him. He made a few saves but didn’t do enough for the goal. Average in possession as well.

Defenders

N. Semedo — 6/10. Saw a lot of action, particularly in the first half. Contested a massive number of duels but won very few. Taken off after a booking.

Y. Mosquera — 6/10. Held on strong for the most of the game. Made 6 clearances to put pressure away. Saw quite a bit of the ball but wasn’t progressive enough.

C. Dawson — 5/10. Took more risks in possession than his partner but they hardly paid off. A lot of his attempts to go long were intercepted. Didn’t get involved in duels much.

R. Ait-Nouri – 7/10. One of the Wolves’ better players. Completed 4 dribbles to progress the ball. Made a number of recoveries as well.

Midfielders

J. Bellegarde — 5/10. The Haitian got overrun in midfield. Tried to dribble his way out often but failed. Couldn’t hold the ball much.

Andre — 7/10. A solid metronomic performance on his first start for the Brazilian. Completed all 40 of his passes before being taken off with a possible injury.

M. Lemina — 8/10. The best player on the night for the hosts. Was absolutely everywhere including the scoresheet. Excellent in offence and defence.

J. Gomes – 6/10. Was solid in possession and kept the ball well. More is expected of his creativity. Put in a solid shift.

Forward

M. Cunha — 6/10. Got in some good positions but failed to score. Didn’t create much either. Spirited outing from the Brazilian nevertheless.

J. Strand Larsen — 6/10. While he only completed 3 passes, one of them was an assist. Also hit the woodwork once. Looks like a solid signing.

Substitutions

H. Hee Chan – 5/10. Only touched the ball 9 times after coming on.

M. Doherty – N.A.

T. Doyle – 6/10. Tried to take some initiative and force the issue but not to much avail.

C. Forbs – N.A.

G. Guedes – N.A.

Manager

Gary O’Neil – 6/10. Not his greatest outing. Failed to manage the game and the substitutions were too late as well.

Goalkeeper

N. Pope – 6/10. Did a decent job altogether. Couldn’t do much for the Wolves’ goal but saved everything else that was thrown at him.

Defenders

T. Livramento – 5/10. A rare poor outing for the usually dependable Englishman. Struggled a lot defensively. Failed to do much on the ball too.

F. Schar – 9/10. Newcastle’s hero of the night. Scored a long-range banger to restore parity. Also did his share of the defensive work perfectly.

D. Burn – 7/10. Solid outing from the big centre half. Bossed about the Wolves attack, defending everything with ease. Also did well in possession.

L. Hall – 7/10. Completed the most passes in the game. Also created a big chance at the other end. Caught out defensively at times though.

Midfielders

S. Longstaff – 5/10. Had a poor first half and was replaced at halftime. Didn’t do much on the ball while he played. Instead, he was dribbled past on many occasions.

B. Guimaraes – 7/10. Newcastle’s most consistent performer in the squad. Will get the assist for Schar’s goal and did a good job all around.

Joelinton – 5/10. A rare bad game for the Brazilian. Failed to impose himself on the game at all and like Longstaff, he was also replaced by Howe at halftime.

Forwards

A. Gordon – 8/10. Was a very impactful presence today for Newcastle. Tormented Semedo, completing a match-high 5 dribbles. Was also fouled the most. The winger also managed to hit the woodwork.

A. Isak – 5/10. Surprisingly taken off at half time. Remains to be seen if he has picked up any injury or whether it was tactical.

J. Murphy – 510. Was largely silent throughout. Cut an isolated figure on the right wing and was well taken care of by Ait-Nouri.

Substitutions

J. Willock – 8/10. Came on at halftime and created as many as 5 chances. Assisted the winner.

S. Tonali – 7/10. Increased the momentum massively after coming on. An all-action performance from the Italian.

H. Barnes – 9/10. Came off the bench at halftime and unleashed an absolute thunderbolt late on to win Newcastle the game.

K. Trippier – 5/10. Came in for a struggling Livramento. Didn’t do much better himself either.

Lloyd Kelly – N.A.

Manager

Eddie Howe – 8/10. Got his substitutions spot on and that was the difference between defeat and victory.
