Sophie Cunningham Takes Digs at Former WNBA Team While Linking Up With Brittney Griner

Sophie Cunningham had a great bond with Brittney Griner ever since her debut in the WNBA. Cunningham and Griner had spend entire time at the Phoenix Mercury, before Griner signed a new deal with Atlanta Dream and Cunningham was traded to the Indiana Fever.

Though there was not much chatter or resentment around these moves whatsoever, Cunningham might have taken a shot at her previous organization with her tweet on X.

During the Indiana Fever's pre-season matchup against Atlanta Dream, Griner and Cunningham linked up at half court and seemingly shared a fun moment together. It seems like both were catching up after being teammates of six years, which is likely for any player joining new teams during the offseason.

Both Sophie Cunningham and Brittney Griner are starting new phases of their WNBA career with new teams. Griner, after playing almost the entirety of her career with the Mercury, has joined the Atlanta Dream. On the other hand, Cunningham was drafted to the Mercury in 2019 before she was traded to the Indiana Fever this off season.

Seems like both Brittney and Sophie had a fun catching up taking place on the half court. Both have found some great footing with their teams and add great veteran vigor alongside the rookies in their team roster. Though Cunningham reposted her interaction with Griner, she did not hesitate to also take a shot at the Phoenix Mercury organization.

In her tweet, she wrote, “I miss this dingus, but we are both happy now.” . The Mercury struggled last season, finishing 19-21. This was the franchise's third consecutive losing season despite making it to the first round of playoffs in two of three seasons.

So, was there any discord amongst Mercury players in the locker room? Not anything significant that we know of. However, Cunningham being a vocal supporter of Donald Trump might have caused some sort of uneasiness amongst her colleagues in the locker room.
