English cricketer Billy Root has announced his retirement from professional cricket. Billy is the brother of the legendary England cricketer Joe Root, who is on the crusp on breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the highest run-scorers in Tests.

Billy Root plays for Glamorgan currently and has been a well-known name in County cricket. The 34-year-old has announced that the 2026 season will be his last, after which will hang up his boots.

Billy Root has played a major part in Glamorgan's success since he has joined the team. Glamorgan Director of Cricket Mark Wallace labelled him as a key part of the team and heaped praise on his consistency.

"Billy (Root) has been a hugely important part of Glamorgan over the last seven seasons. "His professionalism, his consistency, and his ability to perform in big moments have made him a key figure in our squad. He is admired by team-mates and staff alike, and his contribution to our recent white-ball success cannot be overstated," Mark Wallace said.

Joe Root brother retirement came at the age of 34. While he has announced his retirement, his elder brother Joe Root is still an active cricketer and has established himself as one of the best Test batsmen of all time.

Billy Root represented Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan during the course of his career. He thanked both the clubs for the success that he received during his professional career. Lastly, he thanked everyone who has played a part in this journey.

"It has been an absolute privilege to represent two great clubs and to share in the success of four trophy wins. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to make a career out of something I have loved since I was a kid," Root said.

"There have been plenty of ups and downs over the last 14 years, but I wouldn't change a thing. I'll always be incredibly grateful for the journey, the people l've shared it with and the opportunity to live out a childhood dream. Thank you to everyone who has played a part," he added.

Billy Root's Domestic Career

Billy Root retired after playing professional cricket for 14 years. The left-handed batter last played in September 2026, for Surrey, where he scored 11 runs each in both the innings.

His career started in 2015 while playing for Leeds against Sussex. The 34-year-old has scored 4107 runs in 83 first-class matches at an average of 32.08 with the highest score of 229.

Meanwhile, in List A cricket, he scored 1665 runs in 60 matches at an average of 40.60 with the best score of 113*. Billy has also played 50 T20 matches, at an average of 21.13 and a strike rate of 111.81.
