"Was told not to punish India" - Stuart Broad's Father Exposes BCCI's Soft Power

Former England cricketer Stuart Broad’s father Chris Broad, who also served as the match referee for the International Cricket Council (ICC), has exposed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the India National Cricket Team. He made massive allegations about how he was asked not to punish the Indian team.

The BCCI is no doubt the richest cricket board in the world. It’s fair to say that they have an outside influence on the ICC because of their soft power. Over the years, we have often seen various players from other countries lashing out at the ICC for favouring the Indian side in crunch situations.

For instance, David Miller, who was caught by Suryakumar Yadav at long off in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, openly criticized the Indian side and the umpires for terming him out, even when it wasn’t. Even during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Team India was criticized for playing all the games at one venue.

Chris Broad India Comments: Ex-Match Referee Exposes BCCI

Chris Broad, who is also the father of former England pacer Stuart Broad, has made a shocking revelation. In an interview with The Telegraph, Chris said that he was told not to punish India for slow over-rate as ICC match referee.

“I was told not to punish India for slow over-rate as ICC match referee,” Chris Broad said.

Not only this statement, the former ICC match referee also made a bold claim, saying India, with all their power and money, have taken over the ICC in many ways. He also took a sigh of relief, saying that he is happy not to be around this time as the situation is political now:

“India got all the money and have now taken over the ICC in many ways. I’m pleased I’m not around because it’s a much more political position now than it ever has been,” he added.

Chris Broad BCCI statement is a huge one considering the position of Indian cricket at the moment. The BCCI holds the utmost power in the ICC due to the huge revenue it generates for the board.

Stuart Broad father, Chris Broad has a huge amount of experience as a match referee. He officiated in 123 Tests, 361 ODIs, and 138 T20Is. He worked as a match referee since 2003 but his contract wasn't renewed in 2024.

India's Ongoing Series

The India national cricket team is currently locking horns with the Australia national cricket team in a white-ball series. The two teams are locking horns with each other in the three-match ODI and the five-match T20I series.

The ODI leg of the series has been done and dusted and it saw the Australian side winning by the margin of 2-1. The Mitchell Marsh-led side won the first two games in Perth and Adelaide but lost the final match of the series in Sydney, thanks to the heroics from the GOATS of cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The focus is now on the T20I series, which will begin on October 29. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side and they will be high on confidence, having won the last assignment in Asia Cup 2025, without losing a single game.
