New Zealand cricket team suffered a massive blow when their star batter Kane Williamson announced his international retirement midway during the 3-match Test series against England.

Williamson played in the first Test at Lord's, one of the best cricket stadiums in the world, but delivered modest returns with the bat. With Williamson unavailable, the NZ team management had a big decision to make about his replacement for this do-or-die game.

However, they have made the final call on Kane Williamson replacement for 2nd Test. Unfortunately, it is not Will Young to replace Williamson in this game. Young was earlier called up to the squad as Kane Williamson's replacement for the rest of the series.

Henry Nicholls Replaces Kane Williamson For ENG vs NZ 2nd Test

According to ESPNCricinfo, veteran middle order batter Henry Nicholls is all set to play at No. 3 for New Zealand in the second Test match at The Oval against England. Nicholls is a seasoned player for NZ, who has been around this squad for several years.

The left-handed batter was once a permanent fixture at the No. 5 spot for New Zealand in Test cricket. However, poor form and the arrival of other talented batters like Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell forced him out of contention.

Nicholls has played just two Tests since the beginning of 2024. Both of those matches were during New Zealand's tour of Zimbabwe, when Williamson was unavailable for selection.

Henry Nicholls batting position will be No. 3 for this Test and it will be a challenge for him to fill in for Kane Williamson, one of the best Test batsmen of all time. However, he has shown enough batting talent and grit over the years and will be needed to use all his experience here. It won't be easy that he will play in a must-win game on his return as NZ look to come back into the series.

Tom Latham Backs Henry Nicholls For No. 3 Spot

NZ captain Tom Latham backed Henry Nicholls to perform well in the ENG vs NZ 2nd Test even though it's a new batting position for him. Latham pointed towards Nicholls' fantastic domestic form where he has been impressive with the bat.

“He's someone that has a lot of international experience. He's been out of the squad for a couple of years now, but has certainly forced his way back into the squad through weight of runs at domestic level. It's a really exciting opportunity for him to come back into the side in a role at No. 3 that he's been doing for Canterbury back home," Latham said.

New Zealand also had an option to play Will Young at the No. 3 spot. Young has traditionally done well at the top order and has batted at No. 3. However, the Kiwis have decided to trust the left-hander Henry Nicholls with Young at the bench.
