Hong Kong Sixes Rules Explained: Format, No. of Players & Playing Conditions

3 min
India batters enter the ground against Pakistan

The Hong Kong Sixes 2026 has begun, bringing three days of fast-paced cricket and explosive batting action to fans. The tournament features 12 teams competing in a shortened format. India are also beginning their campaign today, October 30, against the arch-rivals Pakistan in a high-profile Group C encounter.

Led by Krunal Pandya, India will aim to make a winning start in a competition known for its unique rules, aggressive approach and entertaining contests. If you want to know more about the Hong Kong Sixes rules and regulations, here are all the details.

Hong Kong Sixes Format: Number Of Players And Overs

The Hong Kong Sixes is played in a six-a-side format, with six players from each team taking the field. Unlike traditional cricket, where teams field 11 players, this competition is designed to deliver quick, high-scoring encounters where some of the most dangerous batsmen in the world thrive.

Each match consists of six overs per side, with six balls in a standard over. Teams must maximise their scoring opportunities, making power-hitting and smart running between the wickets crucial.

The bowling rules also add an interesting dimension to the contest. Each team can use its players as bowlers, but only one player is permitted to bowl two overs, while the remaining bowlers can deliver one over each.

The tournament features 12 participating teams, with the group-stage matches determining the teams advancing to the knockout rounds. The competition concludes with the final, where teams will battle for the title.

Hong Kong Sixes 2026 Playing Conditions: Batting, Bowling And Dismissals

The Hong Kong Sixes playing conditions differ from regular ODIs and T20Is in several ways. Batters must retire once they reach 50 runs, although they can return to the crease if the remaining batting pair is separated and a retired not-out batter is eligible to resume.

Wides and no-balls result in an extra run for the batting side, along with an additional delivery. However, a no-ball does not bring a free hit, unlike in ODIs and T20Is.

The format places a premium on aggressive batting, with boundaries and quick scoring often proving decisive at one of the smallest cricket stadiums in the world. The boundaries are much shorter than those in international cricket, making it easier for batters to clear the ropes and dispatch deliveries for sixes.
