Dickwella looked in great touch in the first innings of the SL vs IND 1st Test as he scored a brilliant 80 on his return to international cricket. He looked in fine form during the second innings as well but his knock was cut short by some brilliance from Jaiswal. During the first session of Day 5, Dickwella wicket controversy became the main highlight. The SL wicketkeeper came to bat when his team was struggling at 142-5. Knowing that he can change the course of the game, Jaiswal, who was fielding at square leg, began sledging Dickwella and provoked him to play a big shot.

Jaiswal, one of the best openers in the world, asked Dickwella to play an attacking shot by pointing towards the square-leg region. Dickwella obliged and asked the India opener to take him to the IPL if he succeeds.

The Sri Lanka wicketkeeper couldn't resist and took the challenge given by the India batter. However, he lost his wicket in the process. Despite the fall of Niroshan Dickwella's wicket, Sri Lanka resisted well with Keshara Nuwantha and the well-set Sonal Dinusha. Both shared a crucial 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket which annoyed India.

However, the Sonal Dinusha got out for a well-made 84, which ended Sri Lanka's hopes. The hosts lost their next two wickets on the same score. Sri Lanka were finally bowled out for 206, handing the Men in Blue a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
