Just ahead of the Ashes 2025-26 series, Josh Hazlewood suffered a hamstring injury while playing a Sheffield Shield match last month for NSW against Victoria. He was ruled out of the first two games of the series against England but was expected to make a comeback in the third game in Adelaide.
Josh Hazlewood Injury Update: Australia Star Suffers Another Blow
In what is a big blow, Josh Hazlewood, who is one of the best Test bowlers in the world, suffered a fresh low-grade Achilles injury. This means that he is in danger of missing the next match in Adelaide if not the entire series. The pacer is expected to resume running and bowling next week but only if his Achilles recovers.
Hazlewood was even expected to play the ongoing pink-ball test but following his injury, he was asked to stay in Sydney. He now remains doubtful for the entire series. Although there is still time for the third game, which will begin on December 17, the common thought is that he might not be available until the fourth Test at the MCG or beyond.
The development of Josh Hazlewood facing a fresh injury was confirmed by a Cricket Australia official, who said:
“Josh Hazlewood reported Achilles soreness this week during his rehabilitation from a recent hamstring injury,” a CA spokesperson said in a statement. “It is a low-grade issue, and he is expected to recommence running and bowling next week.”
Following his recovery from hamstring injury, Hazlewood had resumed bowling in the nets in but the latest injury has pushed his recovery back. The chances of Josh Hazlewood Ashes comeback look very bleak and if he misses the entire series, it would be the first time he has missed the entire home season since he made his debut in 2014 against the Indian Cricket Team.
In his absence, Scott Boland has played the first two games of the series but hasn’t looked that effective. Australia would be hoping that he plays some part in the series as he is one of the best pacers in the Test format and has played a massive role in Australia’s success at home.
Will Josh Hazlewood Play Next Match of The Ashes?
Josh Hazlewood now looks all but ruled out of the next match in Adelaide Oval, one of the most beautiful cricket stadiums in the world. There are chances that he might be back in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, beginning December 26. But things don’t look positive for this to happen.
Even former Australian cricketer Damien Fleming on SEN said that Hazlewood is likely to play the last match in Sydney, which will be the last match of the series. On the other hand, skipper Pat Cummins is all set to make a comeback in the next match, which will boost the chances of the home team.
