The upcoming edition of Lanka Premier League is set to have a controversial rule. This rule is already followed in the Indian Premier League, and has faced backlash by some of the best cricketers in the world.

It is the Impact Players rule, which will be implemented in LPL 2026. The rule is already in two of the biggest cricket leagues in the world, IPL and ILT20. However, it has been under the scanner for various reasons.

LPL Introduce Impact Player Rule

The decision to introduce the Impact Player rule in LPL has come as a bit of a surprise given its negative response so far. However, the Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to implement it from the upcoming edition.

The rule brings flexibility to bring in an extra player for a match. It allows both the teams to field an extra batter and a bowler. Due to the presence of an extra batter, the chance of getting higher scores increases.

However, there is a main drawback of this rule as well. Due to the Impact player rule, the role of all-rounders are getting limited as teams are preferring more specialist options. It has clearly impacted the growth of young and talented all-rounders and has faced scrutiny in the IPL.

Now, it remains to be seen how the LPL Impact Player rule affects the league. This rule also gives chances to young players to make a positive impact in the game. The Sri Lankan administrators will be hoping that it gives them a positive outcome.

Sachin Tendulkar Comments on Impact Player Rule

Recently, the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar gave his opinion on the Impact Player rule. Tendulkar wants this rule to be removed on an immediate basis. While calling it his “personal” opinion, Sachin feels that an extra player isn't needed in a 20-over game.

"I feel there are a few things which, on a personal note that I can say, I think the impact player needs to go away. I feel when in a T20 format you just have to play 20 overs, and then you are adding one more batter to that line-up. Where bowlers are already being challenged, I find that imbalance," Tendulkar said during the ESPNCricinfo awards.

The Impact player rule in IPL is applicable till the year 2027 now. After 2027, the rule will be reviewed again by the IPL governing council and a further decision will be taken accordingly.
