Piyush Chawla Retirement

Veteran India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year-old shared the news on Friday afternoon through a heartfelt statement on Instagram. With this, the journey of one of India’s consistent cricket performers came to an end.

Chawla was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007 and the ODI World Cup-winning squad in 2011. He played 3 Tests, 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 7 T20 Internationals for India. Across all formats, he took a total of 43 wickets.

He also made a name for himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chawla played for several teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was a part of KKR’s IPL title win in 2014, scoring the winning runs in the final against Punjab Kings.

Piyush Chawla Retirement

Chawla took to Instagram to bid an emotional goodbye to his cricketing journey. Posting about his retirement on Instagram, he wrote, “Closing this chapter with Gratitude!! Retiring from all formats of the game. Thank you everyone for your support throughout this beautiful journey.”

In his official statement, Chawla wrote, “After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game.”

He stated that being a part of India’s World Cup squads in 2007 and 2011 was a blessing. He thanked all the IPL teams who trusted him during his career. He also gave special thanks to his late father, who supported him from the beginning. “Without him, this journey would never have been possible,” Chawla added.

The leg-spinner claimed the Indian Premier League to be a very special chapter in his career. Although he has stepped away from the game, he said that cricket will always live within him.

He ended the statement by saying, “I now look forward to embarking on a new journey, carrying with me the spirit and lessons of this beautiful game.”

Notably, Chawla started playing competitive cricket at the age of 15. He represented India U19 and Uttar Pradesh U22 early in his career. He first grabbed national attention after he bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a googly during the Challenger Series.

At 17, he made his first-class debut and quickly moved up the ranks. He made his Test debut way back in 2006, becoming one of the youngest spinners to play for India. Chawla's variations as a legspinner made him a difficult bowler to pick during the initial stages of his career.
