Punjab Pull Off a Miraculous Win Despite Sarfaraz Khan's Dominating Knock

Punjab Cricket Team came up with a magical effort with the ball in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 game against Mumbai. The game between the two teams took place at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur on Thursday, January 8.

Mumbai won the toss and opted to field against Punjab. They came up with a sensational effort with the ball and didn’t allow the opposition batters to cross the line. The Punjab players were clearly exhilarated with this victory and it was visible from their celebration.

Both the in-form openers in Abhishek Sharma (8) and Prabhsimran Singh (11) fell early with Mumbai being at the top. Soon after that, Harnoor Singh bagged a two-ball duck. Naman Dhir (22) tried to bring Punjab back in the game, but fell too as his side was left reeling at 65 for four inside 14 overs. With the team under pressure, Anmolpreet Singh and Ramandeep Singh joined hands and bailed the team out of trouble.

Both Anmolpreet (57) and Ramandeep Singh (72) slammed solid fifties that put pressure back on Mumbai. However, the lower-order couldn’t capitalise on their stand. Punjab posted just 216 runs despite having some of the most dangerous batsmen in the world on their side.

Mumbai Start Well But Lose the Plot

Mumbai had a decent start with the bat with Angkrish Raghuvanshi (23) and Musheer Khan (21) batting well. But the real blitz was provided by Sarfaraz Khan in the Mumbai vs Punjab Vijay Hazare trophy match. The right-hander batted at three and changed the complexion of the game with his brutal knock.

Middle order batter Sarfaraz Khan slammed one of the fastest fifties in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as Punjab bowlers had no clue to his carnage. After that, Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer held the fort for his side and played another decent innings. He slammed 45 runs off 34 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes as Mumbai were right on the track to chase the target.

At one stage, Mumbai were cruising at 169 for three, but Punjab bowlers made a stunning comeback as fell, the wickets fell like a pack of cards with Mayank Markande and Gurnoor Brar doing most of the damage with their four-wicket haul each.

Mumbai got all out for just 215 and lost the game by a margin of just one run. The loss will hurt Mumbai big time as they bottled in what seemed to he an easy chase for them. For magical effort with the ball, Gurnoor Brar, who returned with the figures of 4/57 was awarded the Player of the Match.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy points table of Group C, Punjab now take the top position with 6 wins out of their seven games. Mumbai are at the second spot with 5 wins out of their seven matches.
