Along with Rohit, one of the best batsmen in the world, Virat Kohli also finds a place in the squad, with Shastri stressing that players of Kohli's class and big-match temperament remain invaluable in a World Cup campaign. For the wicketkeeper's role, Shastri selected Rishabh Pant as his first-choice option and did not include Ishan Kishan in the final 15. His all-round department features Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy. In the bowling attack, Shastri picked Kuldeep Yadav as the specialist spinner, supported by the spin-bowling abilities of Axar and Sundar.

The pace attack is led by one of the best bowlers in the world, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, while Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have also been included despite recent injury and fitness concerns, with Shastri expressing confidence that both experienced fast bowlers can still play a key role if they are fully fit. Despite Mohammed Shami not featuring regularly in India's ODI setup after the 2025 Champions Trophy, Ravi Shastri has retained the veteran pacer in his preferred squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Shami's most recent ODI appearance came in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai on March 9, 2025. Since then, he has not represented India in the 50-over format.

Ravi Shastri has also backed the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, even though the experienced seamer has been out of India's international plans for several years. Bhuvneshwar last played for India in November 2022 during the white-ball tour of New Zealand, with his final ODI coming against South Africa at Paarl on January 21, 2022. While he has remained away from international cricket, he has consistently impressed in the IPL with his swing bowling and control in both the powerplay and death overs.
