Major Dip in IPL Brand Value: What Led to the Downfall of the League?

3 min
IPL Brand Value

The Indian Premier League brand value dropped sharply in 2025, falling by 20%, with only one franchise managing to grow its value this season. A report from the Times of India says the IPL ecosystem, which was worth $12 billion last year, has now slipped to $9.6 billion. This is only the second time in the league’s history that its overall value has gone down; however, it is still the richest cricket league in the world.

According to the assessment, the IPL lost momentum when India and Pakistan were involved in a major military confrontation in early May. As the tension grew, many IPL games, including the playoffs, were put on hold for a week due to safety issues.

Know More About the Reason Behind the Decline in IPL Brand Value

IPL 2025 became only the second season in the league’s history where the tournament had to be halted in between. Rising tensions along the India–Pakistan border forced the organisers to pause the competition for nearly a week.

This disruption has been highlighted as a major reason behind the IPL brand value drop. Added to that, uncertainty around the upcoming mega auction and the nationwide ban on real-money gaming apps also contributed to the financial dip.

The only other time Brand Finance recorded a fall in IPL’s value was in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought global sport to a pause.

A separate report released by D&P Advisory in October also pointed to a two-year downward trend in the league’s worth. Their assessment showed the IPL valued at ₹76,100 crore ($8.8 billion) in 2025, lower than ₹82,700 crore ($9.9 billion) in 2024 and a steep drop from ₹92,500 crore ($11.2 billion) in 2023.

Decline in the Brand Value of RCB, MI & CSK!

Among all ten IPL teams, nine experienced a fall in their brand value, with Gujarat Titans emerging as the only exception. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the league’s two most valuable sides, each recorded a drop of roughly 10%, finishing at $108 million and $105 million, respectively.

RCB brand value drop is surprising, even after having a title-winning campaign. One of the best teams in IPL, Chennai Super Kings, the five-time title winners, faced a bigger downfall, sliding 24% to a valuation of $93 million. Kolkata Knight Riders were hit even harder, declining 33% to $73 million.

Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants registered only slight decreases, settling at $66 million and $59 million, while Delhi Capitals saw a significant 26% reduction to $59 million.

Sunrisers Hyderabad slipped by 34% to $56 million, and Rajasthan Royals endured the biggest hit of all, a 35% drop, leaving them at $53 million, the lowest among the franchises. In contrast, the Gujarat Titans were the only exception with a 2% rise and reaching a valuation of $70 million.
