In 2025, Kambli was treated for a serious urinary infection at a private hospital in Thane, and his serious health issues were first noticed publicly at the Ramkant Achrekar memorial in Mumbai last year. During his appearance there, he looked unstable and was even struggling to stand by himself, helped by his friend and teammate, Sachin Tendulkar.
How Did Sachin Tendulkar Support Vinod Kambli?
Vinod Kambli’s longtime friend, Marcus Couto, started an initiative of helping the former player by creating a WhatsApp group. This group includes several former cricketers, including the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, and some of his well-wishers too. All the members contribute financially, helping him recover from his declining health.
Tendulkar has long supported his friend by paying for his 2013 surgeries and is now an active part of the WhatsApp group, responding to his financial needs. Both the former cricketers met each other in late 2024 at a memorial for their coach, Ramakant Achrekar. After his declining health was witnessed at the memorial, he agreed to enter rehab with the support from his peers, including Tendulkar.
Couto, in an interview with Hindustan Times, revealed that doctors have told Kambli to stay away from alcohol, and the current progress is good. However, he often forgets that he doesn’t have to smoke and ask for cigarettes from auto drivers.
“I have formed a WhatsApp group including his friends, and without taking names, they contribute a lot financially. His memory isn’t good, but over the last six months, it hasn’t declined either. He can’t remember much, but when something clicks, he does. Otherwise, it gets difficult for him," said Kambli’s friend Couto.
“Vinod has a clot in his brain, which cannot be removed because he did not take precautions early. And the doctor has suggested that he could have a brain stroke. Because of his willpower, he is conjuring whatever he can," he added.

Kambli's wife Andrea Hewitt recently revealed that all the rumors regarding his health are false and the cricketer is fine. She slammed the reports claiming that Kambli is not well and called them a case of misinformation.
"By God's grace, Vinod is fine. I don't know who is spreading false information about his health," Kambli's wife Andrea Hewitt told India Today.
