Breetzke IN, Stubbs OUT: SA Playing 11 For 2nd Test Against Australia

With the series slipping away from their grasp, the team management has decided to make changes to its squad, bringing a familiar face back into the set-up while leaving out Tristan Stubbs who struggled to make an impact in Durban.
Will Matthew Breetzke Be Included in SA Playing 11 For 2nd Test Against Australia?
South Africa have recalled Matthew Breetzke in place of Tristan Stubbs for the second Test against Australia, scheduled to begin on October 18 at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The 17-member squad features one change from the opening Test, with Stubbs losing his place after managing just 33 runs across two innings.
Breetzke's return comes on the back of encouraging performances in limited-overs cricket. He has emerged to become one of the best ODI batsmen in recent times. The right-handed batter scored a century in the first ODI against Australia last month, strengthening his case for another opportunity in the longest format. He has played two Tests so far, against Bangladesh in 2024 and Zimbabwe in 2025, scoring 14 runs across those appearances.
Head coach Shukri Conrad highlighted Breetzke's recent form, attitude and temperament as important factors behind his selection. The batter could be considered for an opening role alongside Aiden Markram for the SA playing 11 for 2nd Test against Australia although the final batting order will depend on the conditions and the team's combination.
Another notable development is Ryan Rickelton taking over wicketkeeping duties. This could leave Kyle Verreynne out of the SA playing 11 for Gqeberha Test, although they have retained him in the squad. Kagiso Rabada is also expected to return after missing the first Test as a precaution because of hamstring concerns.
