Sri Lanka Professional Cricketers Association: Structure, Objective and All Members

The Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers' Association (SLPCA) was officially launched on August 8. 2026, marking a significant step towards giving professional players in the country a stronger and more independent platform. Sri Lanka men's white-ball captain and one of the best ODI batsmen in the world, Kusal Mendis, has been named the association's first president.

Prominent players, including one of the best women cricketers and Sri Lanka's women's captain Chamari Athapaththu and star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, have also shown their support behind the initiative. The SLPCA aims to represent the collective interests of professional cricketers and provide them with an independent voice on matters.

The formation of the association comes at a crucial time for Sri Lankan cricket, which is currently going through administrative changes. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is being overseen by a temporary, government-appointed Cricket Transformation Committee. The launch of the SLPCA is being viewed as another important development, and a new framework for Sri Lankan cricket is also reportedly in action.

What is Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers' Association?

The Sri Lanka players association is a new organisation created to represent professional cricketers in Sri Lanka and give them a stronger voice. It will work for players' interests, welfare and professional needs while helping them raise important issues collectively.

The Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers' Association (SLPCA) will have a direct link with the World Cricketers' Association (WCA), the international body that represents professional players around the world. Sri Lanka's growing involvement in the global players' network was also highlighted earlier this year when women's captain Chamari Athapaththu was named to the WCA Player Advisory Board.

Before the SLPCA was established, Sri Lanka was among the major cricket nations, along with India through the BCCI and Pakistan through the PCB, without a formally recognised players' association affiliated with the WCA. The new organisation now brings Sri Lankan players into the same framework as the Australian Cricketers' Association, England's Professional Cricketers' Association and the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association.
