Top 3 Replacements for Jonathan Trott as Afghanistan's Next Coach

Jonathan Trott replacement

Afghanistan Cricket Team had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026. After reaching the semi-final of the last edition, they were rated quite highly this time around given the team they had.

However, it wasn’t the case as they faced an early group stage exit and with that, it also marked the end to an era. This was because Afghanistan's former head coach Jonathan Trott stepped down from the role.

Trott remained on the post of Afghanistan's head coach for a long period of four years. The former England batter saw many phases of Afghanistan cricket, in which they achieved some of the highest moments of their cricketing journey.

Who will be Jonathan Trott Replacement as Afghanistan's New Coach?

Jonathan Trott played a massive role in taking Afghanistan cricket to great heights. He was one of the main reasons why the Rashid Khan-led side started beating big teams in the big events.

Although he openly mentioned that he wanted to continue that role, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) introduced strict policies. As he left the side, we took a look at three possible candidates to replace him.

1. Hashim Amla

Hashim Amla is the frontrunner to take over the coaching duties of Afghanistan. There have been reports which claimed that ACB has shortlisted a few names and one among them is the GOAT of cricket, Hashim Amla.

Amla has earlier played a part in the coaching setup with the Afghanistan cricket team. The reports also claimed that it is very likely that a new coach will be announced before the series against Sri Lanka.

2. Dale Steyn

Another possible candidate for Jonathan Trott replacement is Dale Steyn. The former South African pacer, who is regarded as one of the best Test bowlers of all time, has been closely following the rise of low-ranked nations. After Nepal almost pulled an upset against England, he also offered his coaching services to them.

With Steyn being open to taking the coaching roles, the ACB could rope him in for the role of Afghanistan new coach. His addition would be a big boost for Afghanistan cricket as they eye a comeback after a disappointing T20 World Cup recently.

3. Asghar Afghan

One of the top replacements as Afghanistan cricket team head coach will be their former international Asghar Afghan. The ACB has openly mentioned that they want a coach who could stay in Afghanistan and work closely with the team.

With Afghan being a popular figure in Afghanistan cricket and also the fact that he is the most successful captain of the country, he could well take over the role. He is among the highly respected figures in Afghanistan cricket, making him a perfect candidate for the role.
