Was Ellyse Perry Out or Not Out During Women's T20 World Cup Final?

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 title went to Australia as they defeated the hosts England in the final match at Lord's. It was a battle of two of the oldest arch-rivals and Australia came out on top.

While the match ended without much controversy, an incident during the final stages of the game raised questions. Ellyse Perry, the legendary Australia cricketer, tried to smash a ball over the off-side, but instead spooned a low catch to Sophie Ecclestone at mid-off.

It seemed like Perry had been dismissed as the catch looked clean on the first look. However, the third umpire had other ideas and after multiple replays, Kim Cotton ruled it in favor of the batting side.

It was the 17th over of Australia's innings when Ellyse Perry tried to finish the game quickly and went for big shot through the off side. But she didn't get the elevation and Ecclestone ensured to keep her fingers underneath the ball to take a sharp catch.
It was referred to the TV umpire Kim Cotton although, it looked out. Even Perry had almost gone back to the boundary ropes. But after multiple TV replays, the umpire ruled it not out, which left everyone in shock. It seemed like a moment of misjudgement from the third umpire as Perry looked out on replays as well.

After the umpire ruled it not out, Ecclestone was visibly furious and came forward to have a word with the on-field umpire. However, the decision of third umpire stood and it gave a lifeline to Perry.

England off-spinner Charlie Dean stepped in to stop Ecclestone and calmed her down. It would have been a big wicket as Perry is one of the best women cricketers ever.

Australia Clinch Record 7th Title

Despite the Ellyse Perry wicket controversy, Australia clinched the win in the next over with 17 balls to spare. It was a comprehensive win by Australia as they showcased their credentials of being one of the best women's cricket teams in the world.

Chasing a modest total of 151 runs, Australia lost Georgia Voll early. But Mooney and Litchfield put up a strong partnership and ensured that their team crossed the line comfortably in the end.

Mooney was the top run-scorer with 64 off 49 balls while Phoebe Litchfield scored 48 off 35 balls. Perry remained unbeaten on 13 off 12 balls, ensuring that she stays at the crease right till the end.
