Revealed! Which Two Teams Will Play BBL Opening Match in Chennai?

The upcoming season of Big Bash League promises to be an interesting one for the cricket fans all around the globe. Months before the beginning of the season, it was announced that the BBL 2026 opening match will be played in India.

The decision to play a BBL match in India was made to increase the league's popularity in a cricket-crazy nation like India. Now, those two teams have been revealed which will play the BBL 2026-27 opening match, to be held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Which Teams Will Play BBL 2026 Opening Match?

According to Code Sports, Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades will play the BBL opening match of the season. The match will be highly anticipated amongst the fans as both share a great rivalry with each other.

The BBL 2026-27 opening date has also been revealed. The Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades match will be played on December 12. Things have been finalised, however, the final approval from Cricket Australia (CA) and Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) is still pending.

Perth Scorchers lead the overall head-to-head record against Melbourne Renegades. Out of 24 games played between these two teams, Renegades have won just 6 while Scorchers have 17 wins to their name. One match ended without a result.

Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades History in BBL

The Renegades have not won any game against Scorchers since the last 8 years. They last defeated Perth Scorchers in 2018, by 4 wickets at Docklands, Melbourne. Since then, the Scorchers have won all the eight matches played between these two sides.

Melbourne Renegades will hope that a change in venue will help them defeat Perth Scorchers. The conditions in Chennai are likely to be batting-friendly with the pitches assisting spinners more. This won't suit Perth's bowling attack suitable for fast conditions.

Perth Scorchers are the most successful team in BBL history with six titles to their name. They have some of the best T20 batsmen like Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh. They are also the defending Big Bash League champions having defeated Sydney Sixers last season in the final.

On the other hand, Melbourne Renegades finished second last with 3 wins and 7 defeats. They won the BBL title back in the 2018-19 season and will hope for an improved performance this year.
