Who Will Be Pakistan's New Test Captain After Shan Masood?

3 min
Shan Masood

Pakistan cricket team has suffered a humiliating 0-2 Test series loss against the home team Bangladesh. The defeat has come as a new low in Pakistan cricket, which was once seen as one of the best cricket teams in the world.

After the loss, the person under the most pressure is none other than the current Test captain Shan Masood. The left-handed batter had a mediocre series with the bat and there were always questions marks regarding his captaincy.

This has even prompted Masood to resign from his role as Pakistan's Test captain, according to Geo News. Shan Masood resignation comes at a time when the team is under pressure and wholesale changes are expected for the next Test series.

Who Will Be Pakistan New Test Captain?

With Shan Masood set to resign, a new Test captain is set to be appointed by the chief selectors. There are several options within the team who can take up this role, however, Saud Shakeel is the frontrunner to become the new Pakistan Test captain.

Shakeel is currently the vice-captain of the team and has done well in Tests overall. The left-hander is a solid middle order batter who can play both pace and spin equally well. However, his recent form has been underwhelming, particularly the Test series against Bangladesh.

Shakeel managed just 29 runs across four innings at an average of only 7.25 in this series. During the BAN vs PAK 2nd Test at Sylhet, Shakeel registered scores of 8 and 6 across the two innings respectively as Pakistan lost the match. These performances will be considered by the selectors as they look for Pakistan new Test captain.

Another option for this role is Salman Ali Agha. The batting all-rounder has done well in Test cricket while playing down the order and has bowled whenever required. Agha is currently Pakistan's T20I captain, and has the experience to lead the side. Being one of the key players for this team, he can be the next Pakistan captain in Tests.

Will Babar Azam Become Pakistan Test Captain?

Since there is a search for a new captain for Pakistan Test team, the name of Babar Azam will always be in the mix. Being one of the best batsmen in the world, Babar is a key player for his team in the middle order.

Adding to it, he has previously led Pakistan in this format as well. The right-hander has all the experience but it remains to be seen if the PCB goes back to their former Test captain once again. His current form will also be considered as he remains the backbone of this batting order.
