Why Did India Enforce Follow-On in SL vs IND 2nd Test?

India captain and one of the best Test batsmen in the world, Shubman Gill, opted to enforce the follow-on after Sri Lanka were dismissed for 290, handing the hosts another immediate challenge in the match. Sri Lanka’s innings featured a determined century from Sonal Dinusha, who played a key role in keeping his side in contention for a while. Saransh Jain completed the innings by taking the final two wickets.

Sri Lanka had struggled early at 8/2 but recovered on Day 3. Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Dinusha led the fightback with half-centuries, helping the hosts move to 265/8 before the last two wickets fell. Dinusha’s hundred continued his impressive record against India, giving him three successive fifty-plus scores.

Despite the resistance, Sri Lanka remained 213 runs short of India’s first-innings total of 503/9 declared. With such a significant deficit, Gill had little hesitation in sending Sri Lanka back to bat immediately. India will now aim to strike early in the second innings and complete a whitewash in the Test series.

Why Did India Enforce Follow-On in SL vs IND 2nd Test?

The IND vs SL follow on in the second Test against Sri Lanka was mainly because of their huge first-innings advantage and the limited playing time left in the match. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 290, 213 runs behind India’s 503/9 declared, allowing Shubman Gill to send the hosts straight back to the crease instead of batting again.

The weather was an important part of the equation, too, as rain had already caused significant interruptions during the first three days and the threat of further showers remained on the final two days. India could not afford to lose more time by batting a second time. Enforcing the follow-on allowed the visitors to use the remaining overs to attack Sri Lanka’s batting and push for the 10 wickets needed for victory.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel had also kept the possibility open in his previous press conference, saying that the team would consider the follow-on depending on the situation and weather. Once Sri Lanka failed to close the deficit and were dismissed for 290, Gill ultimately chose the ideal option of enforcing the follow-on.
