Why Did ICC Reprimand Prabath Jayasuriya During SL vs IND 2nd Test? Explained

Sri Lanka's premier spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the second Test of the series against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo.

The left-arm spinner was handed one demerit point for his actions during the SL vs IND 2nd Test, which came under the breach of ICC Code of Conduct. In Test cricket, Jayasuriya is the premier bowler for his team in home conditions and has already won a no. of matches.

Why Did ICC Reprimand Prabath Jayasuriya?

Prabath Jayasuriya was found to be breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is related to the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match".

"Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship contest against India after he was hit with an official reprimand following his dismissal in his side's first innings," the ICC stated.

It was Jayasuriya's first offence during the 24-month period. If he concedes three more demerit points during this period, it can result to a ban. Prabath Jayasuriya ICC reprimand will make him careful going into the next set of games in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Third Player to Get Demerit Points In This Match

Prabath Jayasuriya demerit points incident is not the first one of this game. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando were handed demerit points after they breached the ICC Code of Conduct when they were involved in a physical altercation.

The controversy happened on the first day of the match when Asitha Fernando dismissed Jaiswal and said a few words to him. Jaiswal turned back and walked aggressive towards the fast bowler before hitting Fernando with his helmet. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva later acted as a mediator and separated both of them.
