Why is No Crowd in IND vs AFG One-Off Test Match?

2 min
IND vs AFG fan attendance

During the Indian Premier League, stadiums across the country were buzzing with energy and packed with spectators. And now the contrast is clear as the atmosphere surrounding Test cricket tells a different story. Despite being considered the most demanding and respected format of the game, the ongoing one-off IND vs AFG test match attendance is very limited. Several factors may have contributed to the low turnout.

The most obvious is the absence of crowd-pullers such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whose retirements from Test cricket have left a noticeable gap. In addition, New Chandigarh is experiencing its first-ever Test match, becoming the 31st venue in India to host a men's Test. Attracting large crowds was always likely to be a challenge. This situation may force the richest cricket board in the world, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, to rethink its approach towards Test venues and scheduling.

Some of the best cricket stadiums in the world, such as Wankhede, Chepauk, Eden Gardens, Chinnaswamy, and Narendra Modi Stadium, have consistently produced strong attendance. England and Australia follow a similar model, repeatedly hosting Tests at iconic grounds rather than frequently rotating venues.

Is IND vs AFG Test Match Attendance A Sign of Worry for BCCI?

India’s Test match against Afghanistan may be an international fixture, but it does not carry any ICC World Test Championship points. As a result, IND vs AFG test match fan attendance is really low. Afghanistan are not competing in the 2025–27 WTC cycle, so the match falls outside the championship schedule. This means the result will have no impact on the WTC standings, with neither side able to add points to their tally.

India can use the contest to prepare for a packed Test calendar ahead and give several players important match practice. For Afghanistan, the fixture is another significant step in their Test journey and marks only their second red-ball meeting with India since their debut Test against the same opposition in Bengaluru in 2018.

Although there are no WTC rewards attached to the outcome, that might be the reason for the low turnaround. The BCCI should consider using a fixed venue model for red-ball cricket to attract a massive audience to the ground.
