The absence of so many first-choice players is largely linked to the scheduling clash between the West Indies ODIs and the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. India’s men’s cricket campaign at the Asian Games is scheduled during the same period as the ODI series, meaning players selected for the tournament are unavailable for the home series.

As a result, the selectors have had to assemble a different-looking ODI squad for the West Indies series. The situation also opens opportunities for players who have been waiting for a return to the 50-over side.

Why Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh Dropped From India’s ODI Squad?

Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have not been picked for the West Indies ODIs because both pacers are part of India’s Asian Games squad. The men's cricket competition at the Asian Games runs from September 24 to October 3, while India’s three-match ODI series against West Indies is scheduled from September 27 to October 3.

One of the best bowlers in the world, Jasprit Bumrah's absence is particularly significant given his importance to India's ODI bowling attack. However, his selection for the Asian Games was confirmed earlier, with the BCCI including him in the 15-member squad led by Shreyas Iyer. Arshdeep is also part of that group, and Auqib Nabi has been included as Arshdeep Singh replacement.

The same scheduling issue explains why several other familiar names are missing from the West Indies ODI squad. Rather than being dropped on performance grounds, these players have been allocated to India's Asian Games campaign, and Mohammad Siraj has been picked as Jasprit Bumrah replacement for West Indies series.
