Why Jos Buttler is Not in England Squads For Australia Tour 2026? Explained

3 min
Jos Buttler plays a shot against Australia

England have announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is in November and December 2026. Harry Brook will captain both teams as England continue preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Jofra Archer returns to the ODI setup, while Jacob Bethell is back after recovering from injury.

The selection also offers opportunities to emerging players, with teenage wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew and fast bowler Eddie Jack earning their maiden T20I call-ups. However, England will travel without one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world, Jos Buttler.

Why Jos Buttler is Not in England Squad For Australia Tour?

Former England captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the Australia tour after undergoing surgery on his left hamstring. He sustained the injury during the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley last month, when he scored 69 off 49 balls before retiring hurt. He subsequently underwent surgery and has begun rehabilitation, with no confirmed return date announced.

Jos Buttler injury is a significant setback for England because of his experience as a wicketkeeper-batter and his ability to accelerate the scoring in limited-overs cricket. His unavailability also gives other players an opportunity to strengthen their cases ahead of next year's ODI World Cup.

England will also be without fast bowler Saqib Mahmood, who has been ruled out because of a knee injury. The selectors have instead included a combination of returning players and younger options across the two squads.
