Why U19 World Cup Winners Walk Away Without Prize Money from ICC?

The ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 is currently ongoing in Zimbabwe, bringing together some of the most talented cricketers in the world, in a highly competitive 50-over tournament. The tournament has progressed through the group and Super Six stages and is now towards the business end, with England being the first finalists.

The winner of the 2nd semi-final between India and Afghanistan will move to the final to face the English side. As one of the most prestigious tournaments in youth cricket, the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup naturally draws interest in the financial rewards involved.

However, the reality comes as a surprise to many fans. Historically, the ICC has not offered any Under-19 World Cup prize money to the champions or participating teams, and this approach has remained unchanged, including in recent editions.

Why is there No ICC U19 World Cup Prize Money?

The ICC allocates no formal prize money for the Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, as the competition is structured around player development rather than financial incentives. However, individual cricket boards often step in to reward their teams. For instance, after India’s victory in the 2024 Under-19 Men’s World Cup, the BCCI announced a cash reward of ₹30 lakh per player in recognition of their achievement.

Similarly, the board showed its support for women’s youth cricket by announcing a ₹5 crore reward for the entire squad after India’s title win at the 2025 Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup. This individual step by national boards is necessary to acknowledge and celebrate success even in the absence of ICC prize money.

The ICC's philosophy is that the U19 tournament is about long-term development rather than monetary incentives, with the tournament designed as a global talent-nurturing platform. The ICC aims to help these young players, who are likely to become some of the best cricketers in the world, develop their skills and prepare for the requirements of senior international cricket instead of competing for financial gain.

Will India Win their 6th ICC U19 World Cup Title?

The India’s Under-19 side has established itself as the front-runners to lift their sixth ICC U19 World Cup title on the back of a dominant and consistent display in the 2026 edition of the tournament. The Boys in Blue have looked in splendid form across all phases, passing through the group stage and Super Six round with an unbeaten record.

Their 58-run victory over Pakistan in the Super Six stage displayed their all-round performance, as India outplayed their opponents in the greatest rivalry in cricket. India now set to face Afghanistan in the second semi-final, and with their current form, they will start the contest as clear favourites.

If India manages to overcome Afghanistan, they will set up a final against England, who booked their place after knocking out Australia. Whichever team makes it to the final, it is expected to be a blockbuster one at the Harare Sports Club.
