Why Pakistan Lost 11 WTC Points After England Test Series? Here's Where They Stand Now

Pakistan’s difficult World Test Championship campaign has taken another hit after their disappointing England tour ended without a single win. The three-match series exposed several problems, from an inexperienced bowling attack struggling in English conditions to a batting unit unable to produce consistent runs.

By the time teams arrived at Edgbaston for the final Test, Pakistan had already surrendered the series and were searching for something positive. Instead, England completed a 3-0 sweep with an eight-wicket victory, leaving Pakistan with more questions than answers. Meanwhile, Babar Azam & Co. have faced another major setback which has made their road to the 2027 WTC final even more challenging.

Why Pakistan Lost 11 WTC Points?

Pakistan have been deducted 11 World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third Test against England at Edgbaston, one of the top cricket stadiums in England. After time allowances were taken into account, Pakistan were found to be 11 overs short of the required rate. Under the WTC rules on slow over rate, teams lose one championship point for every over they fall short, resulting in an 11-point deduction.

The sanction came alongside a financial penalty. Pakistan’s players were fined 50 per cent of their match fees, the maximum permitted under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which imposes a five-per-cent fine for every over short, capped at 50 per cent. Captain Babar Azam pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanction, meaning no formal hearing was required.

The deduction has pushed Pakistan position in WTC table even below. They are now ninth with a points percentage of 14.81, having won only two of their nine Tests, lost six and drawn one. Their next WTC assignment is a two-Test home series against Sri Lanka in November.

Pakistan's England Tour Was Full of Controversy

Pakistan WTC points deduction came at the end of a turbulent England tour. The Men in Green lost the opening Test by an innings and 103 runs before suffering another heavy defeat at Lord’s, going down by 194 runs. Their batting failed to cross 200 in any of their first four innings, prompting the PCB to make sweeping changes before the final Test.

Seven players were released from the squad, including Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha, while head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was replaced by white-ball coach Mike Hesson. The overhaul attracted criticism from former Pakistan captains and coaches, who questioned the timing and planning behind such drastic changes in the middle of a series.

The reshuffled side showed more fight at Edgbaston, but England still chased down 130 to complete the clean sweep. The result capped a tour that exposed both on-field shortcomings and wider instability around the Pakistan team.
