Explained: Why Shaheen Shah Afridi Will Not Play For Lahore Qalandars in GSL 2026?

Lahore Qalandars will head into the 2026 Global Super League (GSL) with a 14-player squad and a new leader. In a surprising move, regular captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has not been included, bringing his captaincy stint in the tournament to an end. New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell will take charge of Lahore Qalandars in GSL 2026, while former Australian pacer Shaun Tait has joined as the bowling coach.

Their GSL 2026 journey begins on July 23 with a match against Perth Scorchers at Providence Stadium in Guyana. Along with Lahore Qalandars, the tournament features Desert Vipers, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Perth Scorchers, and San Francisco Unicorns. The five-team competition will continue until August 1, with every game scheduled at the same venue.

Lahore Qalandars also featured in the first edition of the Global Super League in 2024. With Carlos Brathwaite leading the side, they defeated Hampshire and Victoria but lost to Guyana Amazon Warriors and Rangpur Riders. Those two defeats led to an early exit from the tournament.

Why Shaheen Shah Afridi Will Not Play in GSL 2026?

Shaheen Afridi GSL 2026 omission has become one of the biggest talking points after the squad announcement. One of the best bowlers in the world, Shaheen enjoyed great success as Lahore Qalandars captain, leading the team to three PSL titles. He has claimed 138 wickets in 94 PSL matches at an economy rate of 7.96.

During the most recent PSL season, Afridi finished with 16 wickets from 10 innings while maintaining an economy rate of 7.86. Even so, Lahore Qalandars have gone with a different squad for the Global Super League, while Afridi has joined Kandy Royals for the Lanka Premier League.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is yet to issue Shaheen Afridi a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for playing in overseas leagues. The board recently granted NOCs to several players for events such as The Hundred, the Lanka Premier League, the Caribbean Premier League, and the Global Super League. As he is not part of Pakistan's squad for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, he is likely to receive the required clearance soon.
