Umran Malik Pace Going in the Wrong Direction

The 2025–26 domestic season has been a test of patience for Umran Malik. The right-arm pacer was sidelined for nearly six months due to a series of health issues, including a stress fracture in his left hip. This prevented him from building the necessary match fitness for the red-ball format, forcing him into an extended rehabilitation period at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

In his only appearance during the first phase of the Ranji Trophy, against Rajasthan, Malik failed to take a single wicket, struggling to find his rhythm while his teammates made full use of the conditions.

By January 2026, the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association officially excluded him from the team. The selectors turned to Auqib Nabi as his replacement, and Nabi has since emerged as the breakout star of the season. Malik’s white-ball return was equally subdued, as he managed just six wickets in five Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches.

However, as Jammu & Kashmir scripted history by reaching their first-ever Ranji Trophy final this February, Malik has remained an important member of the squad in recent weeks.
