CSK To Make Their WPL Debut? Find All Details Here

This intent was revealed by CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan during his address at the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave, where he explained that the franchise is adopting an approach rather than rushing the process.
While no immediate timeline has been set, Viswanathan confirmed that preparations to invest in women’s cricket are underway, so a CSK WPL team could be on the cards in a few years, while also leaving the door open for them to eventually diversify into other sporting ventures.
Will CSK have Women's Team?
The Chennai Super Kings are preparing to widen their presence beyond men’s cricket, with the women’s game as the franchise’s next major focus area. The idea of CSK women's team was shared by the franchise's chief executive Kasi Viswanathan during his address at the Tamil Nadu Global Tourism Summit 2026.
“Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time,” Viswanathan said when asked about the franchise’s long-term plans.
Currently, a number of IPL-owned teams, such as those from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gujarat, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, already compete in the Women’s Premier League. A potential new CSK team in women’s cricket would not only strengthen its brand portfolio but also place the franchise within one of the fastest-growing ecosystems in Indian sport.
A lot of conversation around the addition of new franchises to the Women’s Premier League has been happening in recent times, with several team owners publicly addressing the subject. At the WPL auction, DC Women co-owner Parth Jindal indicated that the BCCI is seriously evaluating the idea of expanding the competition.
He explained that the objective is to eventually transition the league into a complete home-and-away structure, moving away from the existing model where matches are hosted across limited venues.
CSK CEO Conveys About MS Dhoni Future Role for the Franchise
Apart from the women's team news, Chennai Super Kings CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, highlighted that MS Dhoni remains central to their long-term plans, saying that the franchise’s relationship with him extends well beyond his on-field contributions.
He explained that CSK has no intention of parting ways with Dhoni, as the relationship is built on a vision established at the very start. He said that the franchise’s decision to back a young Dhoni in 2008 was made with clarity and purpose, to back a leader who could take complete control of cricketing matters.
“MSD will surely play this season and will be with CSK forever. We picked MSD in the auction in 2008 and must say he will forever stay our best investment.
We in CSK have known from the very start that cricketers and administrators think differently. It is better that cricketers are allowed to take on-field calls while the administrators focus on things off the field. MSD had our fullest support in shaping the team and the way we played. The bond was organic, and you can see the results,” he added.
The CSK chief executive also revealed the franchise’s future strategy, with one of the best cricketers in the world, MS Dhoni at the heart of its plans. Dhoni continues to play a pivotal role as the brand and public face of the franchise throughout this expansion.
