Anaya Bangar has received a boost in her bid to return to competitive cricket after one of the richest cricket boards, Cricket Australia, confirmed that she will be eligible for elite women’s cricket in the country from March 2027. The decision opens a potential route towards the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), although Bangar will still need to earn a place with a franchise through her performances.

Bangar described the development as a deeply emotional moment after a period in which she feared that her cricket career had come to an end following her transition. She said cricket had been a central part of her life since childhood and that the possibility of returning to the sport means much more than simply gaining access to a women’s competition.

The clearance does not, however, guarantee Anaya Bangar a WBBL contract. She will first need to rebuild her competitive career in Australia, improve her batting, bowling, fielding and fitness, and perform strongly enough to attract the attention of a franchise. She can already participate in Premier Cricket competitions in any Australian state or territory.

Cricket Australia’s framework differs from the ICC’s regulations for international women’s cricket, under which transgender women who have undergone male puberty are not eligible to compete in international women’s cricket.

For Bangar, the next stage is therefore about proving herself on the field. She has indicated that she is looking to return to competitive cricket in Australia, with the long-term ambition of putting herself in contention for a WBBL opportunity. Bangar has also spoken previously about seeking clarity from Indian cricket authorities over transgender participation.

Cricket Australia has provided her a pathway back into elite domestic cricket. The idea of eventually playing against some of the best women cricketers in the WBBL would carry additional significance for Bangar. She has grown up around Indian cricket and said that facing players such as Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues in an Australian competition would be an emotional experience.
