Will Instagram Stream Cricket Match LIVE For FREE After TikTok? Here's What We Know

Cricket broadcasting is entering a new phase as social media platforms explore ways to bring live sporting action closer to fans. New Zealand Cricket's latest initiative, which will stream the opening six overs of selected T20Is matches on TikTok, has sparked fresh conversations about the future of digital sports broadcasting.

With millions of cricket fans scrolling through Instagram every day, could Meta's popular platform be the next destination for live cricket? While the idea sounds exciting, here's what we know so far about Instagram live cricket streaming.

Will Instagram Stream Cricket Matches LIVE For Free?

As of now, there is no confirmed announcement about Instagram cricket live streaming for free following New Zealand Cricket's TikTok experiment. The recent development involves NZC and broadcaster Sky, who have partnered to stream the opening six overs, known as the Genesis Powerplay, of three selected T20 internationals on the official BLACKCAPS TikTok account.

The Tiktok cricket live streaming initiative begins with the NZ vs IND 1st T20I on October 22, with the coverage available in vertical format for fans in New Zealand. The other selected fixtures include the White Ferns' T20I match against Bangladesh in December and New Zealand's T20I against Sri Lanka in January.

The experiment is designed to attract younger audiences and make cricket accessible through platforms they already use. However, it is a limited broadcast arrangement rather than a move to make every international cricket match freely available on social media. Instagram has not announced a similar initiative for live cricket coverage, and there is no confirmed timeline for such a development.

Could Instagram Become the Next Platform for Free Cricket Streaming?

Instagram already plays a significant role in cricket's digital ecosystem, with teams, players, broadcasters and the ICC using Reels, Stories and other features to engage fans.

Meta has previously partnered with cricket stakeholders for digital content, including match highlights and fan engagement initiatives during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where the best cricket teams in the world were playing. However, sharing highlights and streaming live matches are two different things, particularly when broadcasting rights are involved.

For Instagram to offer live cricket, it would need suitable agreements with rights holders and broadcasters, along with the necessary distribution arrangements.

TikTok's latest experiment could encourage other platforms to explore similar opportunities, particularly through shorts, mobile-friendly live coverage. But that does not automatically mean Instagram free cricket live streaming will be available.
