Washington Sundar played first-class cricket for the first time in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season. On 6 October 2016, Washington made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. He played 12 matches for Tamil Nadu in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy and scored 532 runs at an average of 31.29, as well as took 300 wickets at an average of 26.93.
At the same time, in the 2017-2018 Ranji Trophy, he scored his first first-class century while batting against Tripura in October 2017.
