Antonio Conte Club Career
In the environment of the physical and fast-paced football of Italy, Antonio Conte also developed a keen interest in becoming a midfielder in the initial stage of his career. He joined his hometown club Leece and polished his skills of steering the game in the middle of the park throughout his journey in the club’s B team. All the hard work and efforts paid off when he made his senior debut in Serie A at the age of 16 in 1986 under the stewardship of Carlo Mazzone.
Despite looking at a career-risking injury scare in 1987, he didn’t lose hope and worked day and night to return to the pitch. After returning to play, he scored his first goal in the Italian top flight-against Napoli. In 1991, Juventus manager Giovanni Trapattoni lauded Conte for his influential performances and signed him for the Old Lady. The current Napoli manager won five Serie A titles and lifted the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Copa Italia once each in his decorated career at Juventus.

Antonio Conte International Career

Conte had to work hard in club football to receive a call-up from the Italian national football team. Having displayed his quality and skills in the middle, he made his international debut in 1994 against Finland. The then-Italy coach, Arrigo Sacchi heaped praises on Conte for his workload and immense strength and included him in the 1994 FIFA World Cup squad.
Conte stole the show after producing one of the most historical goals in the 2000 Euros through a ridiculous bicycle kick in a 2-1 victory over Turkey. He made 20 international appearances for Italy before suffering constant injuries, resulting in the end of his international career.
Antonio Conte Coaching Career

After hanging his boots, Conte found his passion in coaching teams in the early years of the 2000s. He began his managerial career as an assistant coach for Siena in the 2005-06 season alongside Luigi De Canio. He became the full-time coach of Arezzo in 2006. Conte did not find consistent positive results in the initial days of their coaching career, but he found his rhythm in the second half of the season, resulting in his appointment as the new manager at Bari.
Conte took Serie B to the crown glory in 2009 and also steered them to the Serie A promotion. The Italian manager then arrived at Atalanta, replacing Angelo Gregucci as the coach. But, after a string of bad results that saw the Orobici slump down to 19th position, Conte left the Serie A club amidst the protests of club faithfulls.
In 2011, Conte returned to his dream club Juventus, but this time as the manager of the Turin-based outfit. The former midfielder changed the atmosphere of the team upon his arrival and led the Old Lady to three consecutive Serie A titles including two Supercopa Italiana trophies. In 2014, the Italy National Football Team arrived knocking on Conte’s door after the resignation of Cesare Prandelli. His astounding success at Juventus led a path for him at the International level until 2016. With his 4-2-3-1 formation and defensive strength, Italy began to savor success and reached the quarter-finals of the Euro Championship, only to face defeat against Germany on penalties.
After stepping down as the coach of Italy, Conte was brought in as the new manager of Chelsea with the hope of glory days at Stamford Bridge. In 2017, Conte became the first manager to win three Manager of the Month awards in the English Premier League. The Blues won the 2016-17 English top flight and also lifted the 2018 FA Cup title by beating Manchester United 1-0 under Conte’s management.
In 2019, the Italian returned to his country to manage Inter Milan and helped them win the Serie A title next season, ending the club’s 11-year trophy drought in the Italian top flight. Despite his incredible Serie A run, Conte resigned from his managerial position and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2021. After spending three years in the Northern London club and winning nothing, he has been working as the manager of Napoli since 2024.

Antonio Conte Tactics & Formation

Antonio Conte’s style of play is not beautiful, if it’s compared to the fluid football of Pep Guardiola. But, the Italian is one of the best in his style, which is adapting to any situation during a game. Familiar with the defensive style in Italy, Conte usually prefers to deploy a 3-5-2 formation, which turns into a 3-5-2 during a defensive approach where two left-backs are used on the wings while two out-and-out forwards operate at the front, staying near the penalty box.
A three-man midfield works simultaneously with one of them working as an attacking midfielder. In this formation, the team often relies on long and through balls to catch the attacking side off-guard to score goals on the counter.
However, he used to play the 4-4-2 diamond position in the initial days of his coaching career where the team controlled the possession.
Antonio Conte Trophies & Achievements
