Brazilian Court Orders Lyon to Pay Botafogo 21M Euros in 3 Days

Lyon were once the club that every French footballer dreamed of playing for. Seven league titles, back-to-back Champions League semifinals, a conveyor belt of world-class talent. To add more worry to Olympique Lyonnais financial crisis, the seven-time French champions have received an order from a Brazilian court to pay 21 Million Euros to Brazilian club Botafogo within three days due to outstanding transfer fees linked to inter-club transactions and the Igor Jesus transfer fee dispute. The news that Botafogo sues Lyon have made headlines, and this ruling is seen as a major victory for the Rio outfit. Why Did Botafogo Sue Lyon?

Both Lyon and Botafogo are owned by the same Eagle Football Holdings, led by American businessman John Textor. The American business also owns other clubs like the RWD Molenbeek of Belgium and FC Florida Preparatory Academy. As per reports, funds were transferred from Botafogo to save Lyon from relegation and financial insolvency back in 2022, which were allegedly not repaid, harming Botafogo's finances.

It is said that the total outstanding transactions across clubs have reportedly reached 128 million Euros, and the Brazilian court finally intervened with an urgent payment order.

What Is Igor Jesus Transfer Fee Dispute All About?

Both Botafogo and Lyon agreed on the transfer of players like Igor Jesus to help Lyon’s financial balance sheet, but a transfer ban prevented this. Later on, Botafogo sold Igor Jesus directly to English club Nottingham Forest. As per reports, Lyon were supposed to pay 60-65 million euros for Igor Jesus in instalments and were promised to be paid by a shareholding company, but Lyon missed these payments.

Lyon are already in a severe financial crisis, and failure to comply with the court orders could invite further lawsuits and damage to its financial credibility. It could also see the intervention of FIFA dispute mechanisms, and in extreme cases, can even lead to a point deduction or sanctions.
