Chelsea Women will be losing one of their biggest names in the squad, following the defender and club captain Millie Bright's decision to call time on her professional footballing career. The English defender has wrapped up her career as one of the longest-serving players at Chelsea and was part of the club’s first trophy win in 2015, and added 19 more to her collection before the end of her career.

Arriving in December 2014 from Doncaster Belles, Bright began her Chelsea W career during the 2015 campaign and has played more Women’s Super League encounters than any other player. She broke Jordan Nobbs’ record tally of 210 games during Chelsea W's clash against Liverpool W in November 2025, and holds the top spot with 216. The Millie Bright retirement means the defender is now expected to take on a club ambassador role in the coming days.

Mille Bright Showed Up In The Big Moments For England

The Chelsea Women's captain also shone under the bright lights of the international stage for the Lionesses. Making her debut for England in September 2016, Bright went on to earn 88 caps, while also managing to score six goals for her country. A career highlight for the English defender was being a key member of England’s win at Euro 2022 on home soil, and also captaining the Lionesses as they reached the World Cup final in 2023.

Talking about her retirement, Bright said this in a video address to the fans:

“I think in life we have to make decisions and I think in football we're always given answers, we're always told where to be, what to eat, what time to come to training and I think I'm at a stage where I'm ready to take control of my life and I think no one can tell you what's right in this moment or when the time's right but for me I'm ready to hang up my boots…I'm not going anywhere, don't panic, there's more to come. I think you lot know better than anyone, I'm Chelsea through and through, and I've always said I'd retire at this club. I can't ever represent another team."

What Will Be Millie Bright Last Game For Chelsea?

The club will mark Millie Bright’s retirement on May 16 during their final WSL game of the season against Manchester United W. She will be bidding farewell to the sport against a club where she has recorded some of her best individual performances on the field.

The Blues defender has been central to Chelsea's success against United, even consistently starting in matches where Chelsea has dominated. While she wasn't part of the squad for their recent FA Women's League Cup win over the Red Devils, Millie Bright last game for Chelsea will be the best way to say goodbye to her fans in the upcoming contest.
