Why Eduardo Camavinga is at Risk for World Cup

Summary

  • Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga might not make the cut for Didier Deschamps and France ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • Poor form and inability to help Real Madrid win anything this season have seen his stock fall down the pecking order for France.
  • The Frenchman is considered to be the sixth choice option for coach Deschamps for France, potentially ruling him out of tournament participation.

Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga will be feeling the heat this season as he is slowly becoming the odd man out for both club and country. The Frenchman has been far from his best for Los Blancos this season, as they are on the verge of ending the 2025-26 season trophyless, barring a dramatic turnaround. However, it seems bad form and poor performances for the club are hurting his prospects of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

According to Telefoot journalist Saber Desfarges, Camavinga is reportedly being seen as the sixth choice by France head coach Didier Deschamps behind the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Manu Koné, Adrien Rabiot, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Warren Zaïre-Emery. His performances in La Liga and especially in the UEFA Champions League have drawn unwanted attention and could see him potentially miss out on representing France at the world football's apex showcase event.

The former Stade Rennais midfielder has struggled for form and consistency, and his red card against Bayern Munich in the UCL quarterfinals second leg capped off a disastrous season. While making 26 appearances for Real Madrid, Camavinga has only managed one goal contribution this season.

Is Eduardo Camavinga Place At World Cup Under Risk?

Yes, the Frenchman could potentially miss the plane for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be played in the coming months in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He is facing stiff competition from some world-class players both in his club and other teams as well. A prime candidate to snatch his place away will be Fenerbahce star N'Golo Kante, who has shown his class in recent opportunities for both club and country. In 30 appearances this season for Al Ittihad and the Turkish club, Kante scored four goals and created one assist while marshalling the midfield for the two sides.

Apart from the former Chelsea star, Kone, Rabiot, and Zaire-Emery have shown their class and shown a level of reliability when given an opportunity at the club level and under coach Deschamps. Despite being part of Real Madrid, Tchouameni still seems to be the preferred player from Madrid for Deschamps, as his versatility to play multiple positions will be an asset as injuries rack up throughout the season, especially in defence.

What Next For Eduardo Camavinga and France?

Injuries to key players mentioned by Telefoot could open new opportunities for Eduardo Camavinga to prove himself for Les Blues. However, the feeling seems to remain that the Frenchman will need to go back to the drawing board. Ahead of an important summer for his career, Camavinga will need to figure out where he can improve and if he has a future with La Liga side or look for pastures anew.
