Who will be FC Barcelona's opponents in the Joan Gamper Trophy?

FC Barcelona had a very promising performance last season, starting from winning the La Liga 2024-25, the 2025 Copa del Rey, and the 2025 Spanish Super Cup. Thus, undoubtedly, Barcelona are all set to play in the 60th edition of Joan Gamper Trophy.

Founded in 1966, the Joan Gamper Trophy was inaugurated by the former Barcelona president Enric Llaudet. It was named after one of the founding members of the club. The competition featured four teams contesting two semi-finals, a third-placed playoff and a final until 1997, when it became a one-off match between two teams. Who will FC Barcelona face in the Joan Gamper Trophy?

FC Barcelona will be up against Como 1907, the Italian Serie A Club of former blaugranes Cesc Fàbregas and Sergi Roberto, which will be played on 10 August at 9 pm CEST at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. The fixture was originally scheduled to be held at Spotify Camp Nou; however, it will now take place at Estadi Johan Cruyff. This venue was also used in 2021 when Barça men's and women's teams played against Juventus. Thus, this event marked the first time Barça Women played in the club's official tournament. The match against Como will also feature the presentation of Hansi Flick's squad and follow the team's three friendly games during their Asian Tour. This will serve as the team's final test ahead of the start of the new La Liga season against Mallorca on Saturday, 16 August. The Gamper Trophy will be nothing but a historic one as the two sides will meet for the very first time in Barça's 125-year history and Como's 118-year history.

Como will be the ninth Italian club to take part in the Joan Gamper Trophy. In its 50 previous editions, only 14 have seen the presence of teams from Serie A such as Sampdoria and AC Milan on three occasions each; FC Internazionale and Juventus twice each, and one appearance from Napoli, Parma, AS Roma, and Brescia.

In the 2024/25 Serie A season, Como finished in 10th place on their first return after an absence of 21 years. Additionally, the club also has strong ties with FC Barcelona since Cesc Fàbregas and former Barça man Sergi Roberto joined Como in August 2024 after 18 years at Barca. The Italian club's team also includes defender Àlex Valle, a La Masia product who made an appearance for the first team in a friendly game.
