The Englishman ended up tearing his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Monday (4 August 2025) during his part in a training session.

Colwill was absent during Chelsea's FIFA Club World Cup celebrations at Stamford Bridge in front of supporters on Wednesday (6 August 2025), and that is because he was forced to tend to his injury issue. Enzo Maresca also hinted at the 22-year-old defender's injury at a recent press conference before Chelsea's upcoming friendly match against Bayer Leverkusen, before the club confirmed that he had to undergo knee surgery to fix his broken ACL.

The statement from Chelsea reads: “Defender Levi Colwill has today undergone successful surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 22-year-old had reported back to Cobham for pre-season at the start of this week, before unfortunately sustaining the injury in training. Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action.”

How Levi Colwill Injury Affects Chelsea

This will be a significant blow for Enzo Maresca, considering how Levi Colwill had established himself as a key part of his defensive set-up at Chelsea last season. The 22-year-old defender had made 43 appearances for Chelsea in the 2024/25 season, out of which 35 came in the Premier League. He played five games for them in their FIFA Club World Cup-winning campaign, producing especially impressive performances in the knockout stages and against PSG in the final. That is why Chelsea will be affected by the absence of Colwill as they aim to begin the new Premier League campaign strongly.
