Why is Patrick Agyemang Not Playing for USMNT in FIFA World Cup 2026?

With only a couple of months away from the 2026 FIFA World Cup commencement, the hosts, the United States of America, have suffered a major setback. Derby County player Patrick Agyemang is set to miss the tournament after suffering a devastating Achilles tendon injury during an EFL Championship match against Stoke City on Monday.

The 25-year-old striker will be in the treatment room for a prolonged period of time and should be missing the FIFA World Cup in the summer, as confirmed by the Derby County official statement.

“The club can confirm Patrick Agyemang suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury during the first half of the Sky Bet Championship fixture against Stoke City,” the club statement read, “Patrick will be undergoing a further assessment of the injury later today. The club will provide Patrick with the highest level of medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery.

“As a result of this injury, Patrick will unfortunately miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup. At this stage it would be wrong to put a timeline on his recovery,” it added further.

Patrick Agyemang Ruled Out of the 2026 World Cup

Unfortunately, Patrick Agyemang has endured a severe blow to the Achilles tendon during his latest club outing that lasted 41 minutes. He was taken off on a stretcher following the injury blow, could not continue and was replaced by Jaydon Banel. The striker had moved to England last year from the MLS club Charlotte, and has been outstanding in his exploits.

While in this campaign, he has amassed 14 goal contributions in 38 appearances for the Rams. As of now, Agyemang has won 14 international caps for the USA national football team and scored 6 times for his country, since his international debut last year in January 2025. Additionally, he has been a leading candidate to lead Mauricio Pochettino's attack in the summer.

He was also a part of the USA's recent international friendlies against Belgium and Portugal. The Championship striker had even scored a consolation goal in the 5-2 loss against Belgium. At this crucial stage of the season, Patrick Agyemang injury comes as a serious problem for USA and Derby County.
