Summary

  • Victor Edvardsen landed in controversy after allegedly mocking Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller with an offensive gesture during Go Ahead Eagles’ heavy 4-0 home defeat in the Europa League.
  • The club has summoned him for disciplinary action, signalling a serious warning and a potential turning point in the forward’s behaviour moving forward.

Go Ahead Eagles forward Victor Edvardsen found himself in a pick of controversy as he was summoned by his side after their 4-0 bruising defeat at home to German outfit Stuttgart in the Europa League. Playing at home on Thursday (Nov 27) in Europe’s second-tier competition Europa League, Edvardsen has been accused of mocking Stuttgart ace Angelo Stiller with an offensive gesture during the match. The incident could come as a huge wake-up call for the forward as he faced disciplinary action.

Victor Edvardsen & Stiller: Complete Incident

The incident happened in the final quarter of an hour of the Europa League contest, where Go Ahead Eagles qualified, having won the Dutch Cup. Just three minutes after coming on, Edvardsen mocked Stiller, who was trying to help his teammate Atakan Karazor. After fouling Karazor, who was born with a cleft lip, was mocked with a gesture, repeatedly pointing at his nose - prompting an on-pitch scuffle as players immediately confronted Edvardsen.

However, despite the controversy, the forward had initially denied giving an apology for the incident and had this to say. "I wanted to inject some extra energy into our team," he said. “Adrenaline got the better of me. I play with a lot of emotion. I haven't apologised yet, and I don't know if I will.”

"If I see him again, I could apologise. But emotion is part of football. It's easy to say sorry, but he also said things you don't know about. He could also apologise to me."

The Dutch club immediately responded with disciplinary action as they fined Edvardsen €500 ($580, £438), which will go to the club's social branch. While no further action was taken by the club, Edvardsen is likely to be available for the Eredivisie clash against Utrecht.

"Go Ahead Eagles and Victor Edvardsen regret the incident from last night. The club has imposed a fine of 500 euros on Edvardsen, which will be donated to the club's social branch," a statement from Goa Ahead Eagles read.

The Swedish forward later offered an apology to his opposite number and also confirmed that he went to the Stuttgart dressing room.

"I want to apologise for my behaviour yesterday. Things were said and done between us that do not belong on a football pitch. After the match, I went to the Stuttgart locker room to offer my apologies," Edvardsen added in his apology.

"I have a role as an example to others, and I must behave accordingly," he added.

Will Edvardsen Miss the Next Match Against Utrecht?

Go Ahead Against Vs Utrecht will be the next match, where Victor Edvardsen is very likely to play, as the club has asked the player to pay a fine of 500 euros, which will eventually be transferred to the social branch of the club, responsible for charity. On the other hand, Stuttgart fans and few Eagles fans are demanding the suspension of Edvardsen for his remarks. If the outrage grows, there are chances that he may miss the match, otherwise, it is very unlikely that he will be kept out of the squad due to the incident.
