The Swiss international who has 29 caps for the national team, took to X to post a heartfelt letter addressing his fans and intention to not play for Switzerland under head coach Murat Yakin for the foreseeable future.

Okafor has expressed publicly his decision to not suit up for Switzerland national football team citing unfulfilled promises by his coach and a total breakdown of trust. The star, who plays in the English Premier League, also made it clear that this decision is not linked to a sporting whim and is final until things change regarding the head coaching position.

"This decision is extremely difficult for me. [...] I no longer want to play for the national team under the current coach.
My decision has nothing to do with my playing time. [...] Things have happened that have deeply affected me. Trust has been broken. Promises have not been kept.
I don't want any special treatment. Just mutual respect and trust, but I don't see that foundation for the years ahead," Okafor wrote.

The Swiss winger entered the world football's grandest stage after a decent season with Leeds United. Okafor made 33 appearances while scoring 8 goals and creating 3 assists for his teammates as they secured a 14th placed finish during the 2025-26 campaign.

Head coach Murat Yakin entered Group B as one of the favorites to make it out of the group which consisted of teams like Canada, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Qatar. Yakin didn't deploy Okafor in any of the three games as Switzerland qualified for the next round with 7 points from their three games.
