Roldan was born to an immigrant father from Guatemala, Cesar, and his mother, Ana, is from El Salvador. He has two older brothers: Cesar Jr., who works as a trainer for the LA Galaxy, and Cristian, who plays as a midfielder for the Seattle Sounders FC alongside Roldan.
Talking about his initial days of struggle in the United States as an immigrant family, Roldan says, “They (his parents) arrived in California with very little in their pockets and very limited English skills, but a hunger to work hard and improve their lives – and eventually ours, too. We grew up in a working-class community called Pico Rivera that’s 90% Hispanic, and like our parents, we had to overcome hurdles to make a life in this sport.” The 28-year-old also shed light on how the sacrifices that his parents made have molded him into the player that he is today.
Alex Roldan, known for his strong physicality, plays as a right-back and can also operate as a midfielder. He has a good pace, and his dribbling skills are decent. His high-octane energy on the pitch is also very conducive, which helps the team keep morale high. One of the most important traits he possesses is leadership. One match that defined this quality was against the San Jose Earthquakes some years back. Despite not being a goalkeeper, Roldan put on gloves to help his team keep a clean sheet.
