Angel Correa started supporting Rosario Central from a young age, but he got the chance to join their rivals, Newell’s Old Boys. After being released, he joined two more academies before finding a permanent home with San Lorenzo in 2007. He was a successful academy graduate as he spent five years with the youth teams till 2012. Correa was on the brink of joining Portuguese club Benfica on a free transfer in 2012, but the deal inexplicably collapsed.
He later signed a four-year deal with the Ciclon and was promoted to the first team. He made his senior debut on 31st March 2013 against Old Boys. He netted his first goal against Boca Juniors in May. In the next campaign, his goals helped his side win the Argentine Primera Division in 2014 along with the Copa Libertadores.
La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, which had a history with successful Argentine players, signed Angel Correa for €7.5 million in 2014. As he was excited for the move, his medical with the Spanish club revealed he had a heart tumor. Surgery was necessary for his long-term survival. There was also a risk of Correa not playing professional football again. With uncertainty in everything, Atletico generously agreed to pay for his surgery.
The Spanish club then sent him to New York, where he could get specialized treatment and surgical care along with the best post-surgical recovery. It took six months for him to start light running again. After starting training in August, he joined the club on 13 December. A smooth debut followed in August 2015, a year after he was officially signed.
Correa scored and assisted for the first time for Rojiblancos in a 2-0 win against Eibar in 2015. He became a key starter for Correa and kept his place amidst many star forwards at the club. In 2019, he marked his 200th appearance for the club in a Champions League clash.
The 2020/2021 season was memorable for him. He became a key super sub as he scored some crucial goals off the bench. On the final day of the campaign against Real Valladolid, he scored a crucial equalizer as they needed a win to clinch the title. It helped them win the game 2-1 as they lifted the title.
In the following seasons, Angel Correa was reduced to a sporadic role as the club signed multiple new forwards. He was happy to keep contributing whenever he was called upon. Needing a new challenge, he is seeking a move away from the club in 2025.
Argentina’s U20 Technical Director, Humberto Gronona, had a list of 32 players for the upcoming South American Under-20s Championship. After a trial, Humberto declared the squad and named Correa as the captain. The youngster made his debut for the U20 side at the tournament.
He scored and assisted twice on his debut in a 5-2 win. After playing a key role in the journey to the final, he scored an 81st-minute winner to win the game against Uruguay. He was also named the Best Player of the Tournament. He also led the side in the U20 World Cup in 2015. Despite scoring a brace in the tournament opener, his side failed to make it out of the group stage.
A senior debut followed in 2015 as he scored the last goal in a 7-0 rout against Bolivia. He was a member of the 2021 Copa America-winning side. He also had a substitute appearance in the World Cup semifinal, allowing him to lift the World Cup trophy as Lionel Messi-led Argentina beat France in 2022.
Correa is a World Cup and Copa America Winner thanks to his involvement with the squad. He played key roles in his team's winning leagues in Argentina and Spain. Although he never saw individual laurels, he was named the La Liga Player of the Month in January 2022.
