Paul took to football at a very young age thanks to his bloodline. He joined SV Amtzell before moving to FV Ravensburg. His impressive performances caught the eyes of Bayern Munich’s scouts. A move to the club materialised at just the tender age of 14, and before long, Paul was making heads turn with his impressive performances. He was considered way too good for his age group and was thrust into senior setups constantly. At 14, he had a spot with the U16s, and at 15, he was playing for the U17s. Wanner was playing centrally and on the wings by producing constant returns. By the time he turned 16, Paul was turning up in the U19 Bundesliga South/South-West.
Paul’s apparent quality was too hard to ignore for Julian Nagelsmann, who was managing Bayern Munich at that time. When six senior players missed training in January 2022 due to COVID-19, he was called up to train with the senior squad. Just a week later, he made his league debut for the Bavarians to become the youngest player in their history. He even registered the same record in the Champions League for them. Paul broke Jamal Musiala’s youngest debut record for them.
Wanner admires Musiala in the first team, and ironically, both of them compete for the same spot in the starting lineup. To gain more exposure, he joined Bundesliga 2’s Elversberg on a loan deal. He had a fruitful season in Saarland, where he scored six goals and picked up four assists in 28 appearances.
Another loan spell followed in the 2024/2025 season, where he moved to fellow top-flight club FC Heidenheim. Paul had a fantastic start to life with the club as he scored his first goal for them in the DFB-Pokal. A first Bundesliga goal followed soon, and it got even better when he scored the winner in the Europa Conference League play-off round second leg. When Paul converted a penalty against FC Augsburg, he became the youngest Bundesliga player to do so. However, after a fantastic start to the season, his form fizzled out as his team slumped to multiple defeats as well. They were knocked out of the Conference League and finished in the relegation play-off spot.
Paul lost his starting spot as he was used as a super sub in the latter stages of the season. Nevertheless, he had the biggest say in the relegation playoff against his ex-side, Elversberg. As the tie was all-square 3-3 heading into extra time of the second leg, Paul measured a fantastic through ball for Leo Scienza to finish wonderfully and save his side’s top-flight status. Despite going cold towards the latter stages of the season, Paul finished his first top-flight season with a good return of six goals and four assists. He will be keen to wait for an opportunity at Bayern Munich or move on loan again to a top club.
Paul Wanner had the option of playing for Austria thanks to his birthright. But he never had a doubt about choosing Germany as his national side. He was called up by the German U17s for a friendly game. He even scored a couple of goals during the U-17 Euros qualifiers. In 2022, Austrian national team coach Ralf Rangnick invited Paul to visit the Austrian senior team in the hope of tapping him up for the UEFA Euro 2024.
However, it didn’t go according to Rangnick’s plans as he pledged allegiance to Germany. Paul was soon promoted to the German under-21 team in 2024. He made his competitive debut for them against Poland and scored against Bulgaria in the next game. He is knocking on the door of senior set-up and can expect a call-up soon.
Paul Wanner’s trophy cabinet has a Bundesliga trophy thanks to his involvement with the Bayern Munich first team in the 2022/2023 season. Individually, he is the record holder for the youngest penalty scorer in the league. He is also Bayern Munich’s youngest player in the league and the Champions League.
