Chile vs Brazil Preview
- Tournament: FIFA World Cup Qualification
- Date: 11th October 2024
- Time: 12:00 AM GMT
- Venue: Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos
Chile host Brazil in the ninth round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the CONMEBOL zone on Thursday, desperate for a win following what’s been another disappointing campaign for them. With only one win and five points in the bag, La Roja are second from bottom in the standings right now, with only Peru faring worse (3 points).
Having failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 editions of the World Cup, Chile could experience the ignominy of missing out for the third consecutive tournament, and this might particularly sting them as it’s going to happen in the Americas. As much as they need to win here, their form doesn’t really inspire hope.
In eight official games this year, the Reds have won just twice – a pair of friendly wins against minnows Albania, and then against regional rivals Paraguay. At the 2024 Copa America, they went out in the group stages without winning a single game and without scoring a single goal, a damning indictment of the side’s dramatic decline.
Meanwhile, Brazil are struggling too. The Selecao have lost four of their last five World Cup qualifiers, and sit in fifth place with only 10 points from eight games. This has been one of their worst performances so far, and although they remain within qualifier spots, another setback this week could set the alarm bells ringing in Rio.
Chile National Football Team News
Head coach Ricardo Gareca has called-up 25 players for this month’s double-header against Brazil and Colombia, including star striker Eduardo Vargas, who has scored 43 goals in 114 appearances for the side. Marcelino Nunez missed out with an injury, whereas Ben Brereton Diaz also failed to get a call-up.
Brazil National Football Team News
The Canaries have summoned 23 players for their fixtures against Chile and Peru, with Neymar once again missing out. He’s been nursing an injury for quite a while and continues his recovery on the sidelines. Real Madrid ace Vinicius Junior is also out with an injury. Rodrygo and Raphinha may get chances to lead the line in their absence, along with Endrick. Igor Jesus is looking to make his debut off the bench.

Key players to watch out for in Chile vs Brazil
Eduardo Vargas (Chile)
In the four games that Chile have scored in out of eight, Eduardo Vargas was on target in three, which tells you the impact he still has on the side. The 34-year-old is just eight shy of matching Alexis Sanchez’s all-time record of 51 goals for La Roja and will be keen to further trim the gap with a goal or two here.
Ederson (Brazil)
Despite cementing his place among the world’s best goalkeepers, Ederson has always played second-fiddle to his Liverpool counterpart, Alisson. But with the latter currently injured and hence set to miss this month’s international games, Ederson has a bright chance of starting in goal, and perhaps even making a strong case to become the first choice, should he turn in big performances.
Chile vs Brazil Prediction
Neither side has truly impressed in these World Cup qualifiers, but Chile especially have looked terrible. They have failed to offer a bright spark in the attack while also appearing fragile in defense. Brazil isn’t in their best shape either but have the tools to hurt the Reds.
Prediction: Chile 0-2 Brazil
