Liverpool Vs Newcastle United Preview

Tournament: EFL Cup

Date: Sunday, March 16

Kick-off time: 16:30 GMT

Venue: Wembley Stadium

Liverpool are set to face Newcastle United in the final of the EFL Cup at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Sunday aiming to secure their first silverware of the season.

Liverpool are having an outstanding season this term as they lurk in touching distance of securing their first silverware in the EFL Cup under Arne Slot. The Reds are clear favorites to win the Premier League this season as they maintain a 15-point lead over second-place Arsenal with only nine matches left.

Their dream of winning the UCL shattered in the last match after PSG eliminated them in a penalty shootout of a round of 16 clashes. This defeat also brought the end of their unbeaten streak of seven matches in all competitions.

Mohamed Salah particularly has been in lethal form for them scoring 32 goals in all competitions as he leads the scoring chart as providing the most assists with 22.

Newcastle United on the other hand will head into this clash as underdogs being consistent throughout the competitions knocking out some of the big names in the competition to reach here. The Magpies currently find themselves in sixth position in the Premier League two points behind the top four places.

Their last five matches particularly have been concerning having only registered two wins while losing another three which includes a 2-0 humbling by their opponents on Sunday. However, the impressive form of Alexander Isak will give them hope as he leads the goalscoring chart for them with 22 while Jacob Murphy provides the most assists (8).

Liverpool have three injury concerns in their squad. Conor Bradley who has become the second choice right back for the Reds is suffering from a muscle injury and won't be available for this final. He is joined on the sidelines by Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton are ruled out due to hamstring and shoulder injuries.

However, the biggest concern for Arne Slot will be the injury caused to the pair of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate who limped off due to an injury against PSG in the last match with further tests to follow.

Key Players to watch in Liverpool Vs Newcastle United

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Mohamed Salah is arguably one of the prime candidates for this year's Ballon d'Or for the incredible season he is having thus far. This season his stats have been eye-catching to witness having registered 27 goals and 17 assists in the league and already becoming the first player this term to 54 G/A contribution.

He has been lethal this season, but his playmaking abilities have gone under the radar of everyone as every move seems to start from him only. The only disappointment he will have is after failing to register a goal against PSG in a two-leg tie which saw them get eliminated. Salah's cool and composed finishing has seen averaging an xG of 1.9 in the last five matches for the Reds.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)

The man of the moment for Newcastle this season, Alexander Isak is having an outstanding season for them which has already seen big clubs waiting for his signature in the summer.

The Sweden international has emerged as one of the best strikers within a short time thanks to the excellent tally of 22 goals in all competitions for them.

Although he has just found the back of the net three times in his last five matches, he will be pretty confident to haunt the Reds again after terrorizing their defense in the past meetings. Isak is known for his excellent movements and clinical finishing which has seen him register an xG of 0.4 in his last five matches.

Liverpool Vs Newcastle United Prediction

This clash will surely have goals, thrill, and drama as tempers will be high. Newcastle United will feel themselves underdogs here and will aim to give a tight fight to them.

However, we expect Liverpool to emerge victorious considering their experience in the big matches, and particularly the form of Mohamed Salah gives them the edge here.
