Southampton vs Brighton Preview

  • Competition: Premier League
  • Date: Saturday, February 22
  • Time: 03:00 PM GMT
  • Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium

In the 22nd round of the Premier League, Southampton is set to host Brighton & Hove Albion at the St. Mary’s Stadium, England on Saturday. It will be a clash between the bottom-of-the-table and Championship-bound Southampton and an inconsistent Brighton.

The hosts are currently placed at the last of the Premier League table with just nine points from 25 games. They are currently 10 points away from coming out of the relegation zone and it will be difficult to come back considering the form they have been in. They have lost 20 times in the league this season and gained victory on two occasions.

Out of the two, one came at the start of the month when the Saints defeated Ipswich Town 1-2 at Portman Road courtesy of the goals of Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu. In the last five games, it is their only victory as the other four have been losses for them. They enter into this game after a 1-3 defeat against Bournemouth in the league and a 0-1 defeat against Championship side Burnley in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Brighton has been a bit inconsistent after Robert de Zerbi decided to part ways at the beginning of the season. They are currently placed 10th in the table with 37 points, which include nine wins, six losses and 10 draws. They enter into this game after two back-to-back victories against Chelsea in the PL and FA Cup. Fabian Hurzeler, the manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, was under increasing criticism following their 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest a few weeks prior.

But in response, the Seagulls have defeated Chelsea at the AMEX Stadium twice in a row. In the first of those victories, Brighton defeated the Blues by a score of two goals to one in the FA Cup’s fourth round. Last weekend, they crushed Chelsea by a score of three goals to zero, courtesy of goals from Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma.

On that note let’s have a look at the team news of both sides.

Four players will be sidelined for the Saints’ next game. As they continue to heal Jack Stephens, Ross Stewart, Ryan Fraser, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis will not play. Flynn Downes and Adam Lallana remain doubtful for the game. Although his club lost to Bournemouth 1-3 at home in their most recent Premier League match, manager Ivan Juric started a good lineup. The Croatian manager will be expected to start with his traditional back four and eye for a turnaround.

Due to injury, Mats Weiffer, James Milner, Jason Steele, Ferdi Kadioglu, and Igor Julio are all out for the away team. There are doubts over the fitness of Solomon March, Lewis Dunk and Pervis Estupinanan. The remaining players are healthy enough to play. The Coach, Fabian Hurzeler will bank on the likes of Danny Welbeck, Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh for a good performance against the Saints.
