Real Madrid needed three minutes to answer Stavros Pilios, but a 2-2 draw in Athens ended their perfect Champions League start. AEK had not scored twice in any league-phase match this season, yet they led twice and dictated the early exchanges. For a side that began the night outside the top 24, a point against the 15-time European champions is a statement.

Jude Bellingham is the Man of the Match with an 8.6/10, after a sublime flicked finish restored parity in the 32nd minute. It was his first Champions League goal of the season and his second in two matches. He also released Denzel Dumfries with the pass that led to Mbappe’s sixth straight Champions League goal, matching his best run.

AEK’s pain is that Aboubakary Koita, outstanding for most of the night, switched off for Madrid’s late equaliser. He had scored the opener and teed up Pilios, but Dumfries ran free on the right and the damage was done. For Madrid, Marc Cucurella’s night was mixed: an assist, a booking and a role in conceding the opener.

The draw leaves Real Madrid on 10 points from four games, still well placed for a top-eight finish. Jose Mourinho’s side also saw a six-match winning run across all competitions come to an end. For Marko Nikolic’s AEK, scoring in all four league-phase games is proof they can hurt elite opposition. Check out the AEK Athens vs Real Madrid player ratings.
